New Mexican Lavender

New Mexican Lavender Mother's Day Lavender Event

Cancellation Information...

Dear Friends of New Mexican Lavender,

After lots of thought and discussion with dear friends we have decided to cancel the Mothers Day Lavender Event for this year 2012. It is with a heavy heart we do this but the field will be newly planted and without any blossom this year. We feel it is only fair to wait until there is lavender to rejoice in and that will not be May 2012.

Also the students from the hospitality program at NMSU will not be available this year to prepare and serve lunch. They have been invited to Washington DC. Supporting the NMSU Hospitality Program is a large part of the Mothers Day Lavender Event so without them a large part of our Event will be missing in 2012.

The field is being replanted with 22 varieties. The goal is to see what is suitable for growing in this part of New Mexico. We are not only testing different species of lavender but are planting in a way that will make it possible to grow lavender without expensive farm equipment. We are trying to eliminate weeds in the field by using weed barrier and mulch. We will also be changing from flood irrigation to drip in an effort to save a much water as possible in our desert climate .

We would like to demonstrate that small farmers in the area can profitably grow lavender. It is our goal to demonstrate that lavender can provide farmers with a cash crop in times of drought and less irrigation water.

We will continue with out educational programs this year and look forward to having groups and individuals come and watch what we a doing and enjoy lunch with us. The cost for the lecture and tour will be $20 per person, reserved in advance, and as always lunch is our gift to you for coming. See our calendar for available dates.

We will also continue with our shares and hope you will continue to support us in our efforts.

Sincerely,

Joan Keif, Al Polk, Auntie Em and the Great Danes, Star and Morgan
